This mitt pattern was inspired by Mary Wollstonecraft. In her 1792 publication A Vindication of the Rights of Women she spoke of women’s entrapment by social expectation. “Taught from infancy that beauty is woman’s sceptre, the mind shapes itself to the body, and roaming round its gilt cage, only seeks to adorn its prison.” She was centuries ahead of her time, and her writing has shaped and influenced feminist thought. It reads just as powerfully today as it would have 230 years ago.
This pattern is a simple unisex fingerless mitt pattern with a slipped stitch pattern running in rows from top to bottom. It features an Estonian braid at the top and bottom of the bars, and a 1×2 twisted rib at the cuff and around the fingers.
The limited edition yarn that accompanies this pattern is a sumptuous blend of Merino, yak and silk blend. It has a high twist, giving it strength, elasticity and lovely stitch definition. The subtle colour progressions are short, so as to avoid striping. The yarn is available in four colourways: Resist, Respect, Uplift and Embrace.
